Gennadiy Fuzailov is the founder and executive director of Doctor's Collaborating to Help Children (DCTOHC), a non-profit charitable organization. As a pediatric surgeon at Massachusetts General Hospital/Harvard Medical School and Shriners Hospital for Burn Children, Dr. Fuzailov resides and practices in Boston, Massachusetts, USA. Born in Uzbekistan, he has dedicated years to medical missions, treating children in countries such as China, Colombia, the Dominican Republic, Guatemala, Haiti, and African nations.
Humanitarian Missions in Ukraine
Dr. Fuzailov has made significant contributions to Ukraine's healthcare system. In collaboration with American colleagues, he has provided consultations and surgeries to over a thousand burn victims. These missions stem from DCTOHC's annual charitable trips to Ukraine since 2010.
Clinical Expertise and Care
Renowned doctors from the USA volunteer their services through DCTOHC to treat complex burn injuries that exceed the capacity of Ukrainian medical facilities. Since its inception, DCTOHC has cared for 786 patients and performed surgeries on over 200 Ukrainian children. Patients requiring procedures beyond Ukraine's capabilities are transferred to the Shriners Hospital for Burn Children. Approximately 60 patients have been transported to date. DCTOHC also equips hospitals with modern equipment and provides Ukrainian burn patients access to cutting-edge medical advancements, such as synthetic skin manufactured by Integra Life Sciences.
Pioneer Patient and Early Success
Nastya Ovchar was the first Ukrainian patient treated by DCTOHC. Her successful recovery marked a pivotal moment in the organization's history.
Educational Initiatives: Prevention and Awareness
Beyond clinical care, DCTOHC emphasizes education. Dr. Fuzailov believes that "prevention is the best treatment for burns." He and his team conduct practical training sessions for Ukrainian colleagues, organize internships, and deliver educational lectures. DCTOHC's "Anti-Burns" project educates parents on safety measures to prevent childhood burns. Television and radio advertisements have been developed to raise awareness around burn prevention at home. Studies have revealed a lack of knowledge among parents, childcare providers, and healthcare workers in burn prevention and first aid.
DCTOHC has employed a comprehensive approach to disseminate information: media publications, school classes on burn avoidance, brochures for childcare facilities and women's counseling centers, lectures, and training programs for parents on basic safety measures. According to Volodymyr Zub, Head of the Health Department of Lviv Regional State Administration, these efforts have reduced burn-related incidents over the past three to four years.
The project initially operated in the Lviv region from 2012 before expanding nationwide in Ukraine. The Ministry of Health of Ukraine officially recognized its success.
Research Contributions
Dr. Fuzailov has authored over 35 scientific papers and books on resuscitation, intensive care, and burn treatment.
Advocacy and Holistic Approach
Dr. Fuzailov emphasizes the importance of systemic change to maximize impact. He believes in not only treating patients but also influencing the healthcare infrastructure. For him, it is not enough to perform surgeries and leave. He seeks to identify talented individuals, train them, and empower them to continue his mission. By educating mothers to prevent burns and advocating for prevention at the national level, Dr. Fuzailov envisions a more significant impact on the healthcare system and society.
