Early Life and Musical BeginningsBorn into humble circumstances in Honolulu's Kaka'ako district, Genoa Keawe found solace in music from a tender age. She began singing in a Mormon church choir at the age of ten. Driven by a passion for music, she pursued a professional career before World War II, performing in local clubs and transitioning to radio broadcasting.
Struggles and Determination
Despite her musical talent, Keawe initially struggled financially. To supplement her earnings, she worked as a taxi driver and crafted and sold leis. Determined to preserve her cultural heritage, she learned the Hawaiian language and began incorporating it into her performances.
Extensive Repertoire and Recordings
Keawe possessed an unparalleled repertoire that spanned the entire spectrum of Hawaiian music. Her versatility and dedication led to numerous professional recordings beginning in 1946 with 49th State Hawaii and Hula Records. Later, she established her own label, Genoa Keawe Records.

Performing with her band, Aunty Genoa's Hawaiians, Keawe tirelessly promoted Hawaiian music on a global scale for over five decades. Her signature falsetto vocals became a distinguishing feature, leaving an indelible mark on the genre.

Beyond her musical accomplishments, Keawe was a mother to twelve children. Her unwavering love for her culture and her contributions to the preservation of Hawaiian music have earned her the esteemed title of honorary doctor of Hawaiian studies from the University of Hawaii.
