Early Life and Education
Geoffrey Pyatt was born in San Diego, California, in the La Jolla neighborhood. He graduated from the University of California, Irvine with a Bachelor of Arts in Political Science in 1985. In 1987, he earned a Master's degree in International Relations from Yale University.
Diplomatic Career
Pyatt has served as a U.S. diplomat in various countries across Asia, Europe, and Latin America. In 1990-1992, he worked as a Vice Consul at the U.S. Embassy in Honduras. From 2006-2007, he headed the diplomatic mission to India. He also served at the U.S. Mission to the International Atomic Energy Agency and other organizations headquartered in Vienna.
From May 2010 to July 2013, Pyatt served as the Deputy Assistant Secretary in the Bureau of East Asian and Pacific Affairs. On July 30, 2013, he was sworn in as U.S. Ambassador to Ukraine at the U.S. State Department in Washington, D.C.
Ambassador to Ukraine
As Ambassador to Ukraine, Pyatt played an active role during the Euromaidan protests (2013-2014), visiting Independence Square in Kyiv and showing support for the demonstrators. He also became involved in a scandal after a leaked phone call with Victoria Nuland, the U.S. Assistant Secretary of State for European and Eurasian Affairs, was published.
Pyatt accused Russia of supporting separatists in the conflict in eastern Ukraine. He was nominated by President Barack Obama as U.S. Ambassador to Greece on May 19, 2016, confirmed by the Senate on July 14, 2016, and sworn in in September 2016.
Personal Life
Pyatt is married and has two children. He studied Ukrainian language while serving as Ambassador to Ukraine.
