Early Life and Origins

In the annals of history, the exact lineage of Geoffrey I, Lord of Château-Landon and Count of Gâtinais from 979 to 991, remains a mystery. Historian Édouard de Saint-Phal believed he acquired Gâtinais as a dowry through his marriage to Beatrice de Mâcon. However, this theory has been disputed by Christian Settipani, who found no evidence of a marriage between Beatrice and Geoffrey.

The Inheritance of Gâtinais

Settipani proposed an alternative theory, suggesting that Geoffrey was the son of Gautier I, Count of Vexin and Amiens, and Adele, the daughter of Fulk II, Count of Anjou. According to this theory, Geoffrey inherited the viscounts of Orléans through another marriage, and Gautier I inherited their lands upon their extinction.

Geoffrey's Reign

Geoffrey's reign commenced at an unknown date, but he is first recorded as a vassal of the Counts of Blois. In 979, he witnessed an act of King Louis V of France. By 985/987, he had risen in prominence within the count's retinue, signing documents immediately after the Count of Blois.

Involvement in Regional Conflict

Geoffrey intervened in the conflict between Bouchard I, Count of Vendôme, and Odo I de Blois, siding with Bouchard. As a reward, he received the fiefs of Bois and Athis. This engagement, previously dated to 999, is now believed to have occurred in 991, marking Geoffrey's last known act.

Death and Legacy

In 997, Abbot Ebbone of Saint-Benoît-sur-Loire accused a "Waltherius," likely Geoffrey's successor in Gâtinais, of plundering the region. By this time, Geoffrey was likely deceased, as his own son was still a minor at his death.

Family and Descendants

Geoffrey married Beatrice de Mâcon before 975. They had one known son:

- Aubrey the Crooked (c. 985 – c. 1030), Count of Gâtinais

Additional children attributed to Geoffrey, though not confirmed:
- Geoffrey (c. 980–997)
- A daughter who married Guy I, Count of Mâcon
- Odo, Viscount of Chaumont-en-Vexin
