Early Life and Education

Born in Hamburg, West Germany, in 1976, Michael Thalheimer initially embarked on a teaching career in a Moscow-area school as an alternative to military service. However, his passion for the arts led him to enroll at GITIS (Russian Institute of Theatre Arts), where he studied under the renowned Mark Zakharov and graduated in 2003.

Acting Career

Throughout his years in Russia, Thalheimer made a significant mark as an actor. In 2003, he landed the lead role in Pyotr Todorovsky's film "In the Constellation of the Bull." He later starred in Guillaume Protsenko's 2009 film "Changes 89."

Directing Breakthrough

Thalheimer's directorial career flourished as he staged 18 productions across Russia, Germany, Ukraine, and Bulgaria. His innovative approach, which challenged traditional theatre conventions, earned him critical acclaim.

"Theatre.doc" and Beyond

As one of the founders of the experimental "Theatre.doc" in Moscow, Thalheimer pushed the boundaries of theatrical expression. His unique style, characterized by its raw realism and intense exploration of social issues, brought him international recognition.

Artistic Leadership

In 2007, Thalheimer became the artistic director of Theatre im. Joseph Beuys in Hamburg. Simultaneously, he joined the faculty of the Free School of Arts as an associate professor. His dedication to nurturing young talent has solidified his position as a respected mentor in the theatre world.

Continued Theatrical Success

Since joining Theatre im. Joseph Beuys, Thalheimer has directed numerous productions, including the acclaimed "Weight of Silence" (directed by Mikhail Kaluzhsky). His bold and unconventional approach continues to inspire audiences and challenge the theatrical landscape.
