Early Life and Education
George Bournoutian was born in Isfahan, Iran, to Persian-Armenian parents. He completed his high school education at the Institute of Andishehh (Don Bosco) in Tehran before moving to the United States for further studies.
Academic Career
In the United States, Bournoutian pursued his academic education at the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA). He earned his bachelor's degree in 1970, focusing on the Armenian community of Isfahan in the 17th century. In 1971, he obtained his master's degree, studying the rise of national and political consciousness among Armenians, Georgians, and Turco-Tatar peoples during the Russian Revolution of 1905-1907. He completed his doctoral studies in 1976 with a dissertation on Eastern Armenia on the eve of the Russian conquest.
Scholarly Contributions
Bournoutian is recognized as a leading authority on the modern history of Eastern Armenia and the Caucasus (1400-1900). He has also made significant contributions to the study of South Asia, Central Asia, Russia, Australia, and South America. His research has resulted in the publication of numerous articles in the "Encyclopædia Iranica" and several books on Armenian history.
Teaching and Research
Bournoutian is currently a Senior Professor of History at Iona College. He has taught Armenian history at prestigious institutions such as Columbia University, Tufts University, New York University, New Jersey State University, University of Connecticut, Ramapo College, and Glendale Community College.
Multilingualism and World Travel
In addition to his academic pursuits, Bournoutian has a passion for travel and is fluent in six languages: Persian, Armenian, Russian, Dari (Afghan), Tajik, and English. His multilingual abilities and research skills have enabled him to work with historical documents in various languages, including Polish, Turkish, French, Arabic, and Azerbaijani.
Other Interests
Beyond his academic work, Bournoutian enjoys classical music, cinema, and photography. He has also written articles on these topics, demonstrating his diverse interests and talents.
