Biography of Georgy Arveladze

Georgy Arveladze, born in 1978, is a Georgian politician and currently serves as the Minister of Economic Development of Georgia. He is also the Secretary General of the "National Movement - Democrats" party, led by President Mikhail Saakashvili.

Early Career

Arveladze graduated from Kyiv State University, specializing in International Relations. In 2000-2001, he worked in the Ministry of Justice of Georgia, under the leadership of Mikhail Saakashvili. In 2002, he assisted Saakashvili in the creation of the "National Movement" party and actively participated in the "Rose Revolution" in 2003. From November 2003 to February 2004, Arveladze held the position of Press Secretary, first for Acting President Nino Burjanadze and then for President Saakashvili.

Political Career

In February 2004, Arveladze was elected as a member of the Georgian Parliament on the list of the "National Movement - Democrats" party. On April 21, 2004, he was appointed as the Secretary General of the party. On August 10, he was appointed as the head of the permanent delegation of Georgia to the Parliamentary Assembly of NATO. On October 20, 2005, Arveladze became the Head of the President's Administration. Prior to this, the position became vacant in July 2005 when the previous Head, Georgy Ugulava, was appointed as the Mayor of Tbilisi.

Minister of Economic Development

On November 20, 2006, Arveladze was appointed as the Minister of Economic Development of Georgia, replacing Irakli Okruashvili in this position. Okruashvili had served as the Minister of Economy for only a week before resigning. Prior to this, Okruashvili had been the Minister of Defense and one of the main proponents of a military solution to the conflicts with South Ossetia and Abkhazia - the unrecognized republics that separated from Georgia in 1992.

Views on the Kodori Operation

On July 26, 2006, Arveladze commented on the Georgian military operation in the Kodori Gorge, stating that Kodori is a strategic part of Abkhazia where Tbilisi's jurisdiction is being reestablished for the first time in a long time. He emphasized that the operation in the gorge was not a military but a police and anti-criminal operation aimed at protecting the interests of the civilian population.
