Early Life
George Henry Preble Calvocorressi was born on October 22, 1816, on the Greek island of Chios. His childhood was marked by tragedy when, in 1822, Turkish forces massacred the island's population. Calvocorressi's parents managed to rescue him, and he was sent to the United States with eight other children in 1824.
Naval Career
Upon arriving in the United States, Calvocorressi became the adopted son of Captain Alden Partridge and entered the Navy after graduating from Norwich University in 1831. He served in various capacities, including on the USS United States in the Mediterranean Sea and as part of the Wilkes Expedition, which charted vast areas of the Pacific Ocean from 1838 to 1842.
Civil War Service
During the American Civil War, Calvocorressi commanded the USS Supply and captured the Confederate schooner Stephen Hart in 1862. In 1864, he led a reconnaissance and prisoner capture mission with the USS Saratoga, successfully taking 39 Confederate soldiers captive.
Wilkes Expedition
Calvocorressi wrote a book titled "Four Years in the Government Exploring Expedition" (1855), documenting the Wilkes Expedition. His contributions and leadership were prominent during the expedition, and he received recognition for his work.
Later Life and Legacy
After the war, Calvocorressi continued to serve in the Navy until his mysterious assassination in Bridgeport, Connecticut, in 1872. His death has remained unsolved. He was married twice and had four children from his first marriage.
Calvocorressi's legacy lives on through his contributions to the Navy, his writings, and the three geographical regions named after him: two on the west coast of the United States and one in Antarctica. He is remembered as a dedicated naval officer, a skillful explorer, and a man of unwavering determination.
