Early Life and Education

George Dewey was born on December 26, 1837, in Montpelier, Vermont.His father was a physician and a founder of the National Life Insurance Company. Dewey attended school in Johnson, Vermont, and entered the Norwich Military School at age 15. In 1854, he entered the United States Naval Academy, graduating in 1858.

Naval Career

Dewey was commissioned as a midshipman and served on the sloop-of-war "Saratoga."He then received an appointment to the USS Wabash, flagship of the Mediterranean Squadron. During the Civil War, Dewey served with the Union forces, participating in the blockade of the South and the capture of New Orleans.

After the war, Dewey held various positions in the Navy.In 1880, he became head of the Lighthouse Board. In 1897, he returned to active duty and assumed command of the Asiatic Squadron.

Battle of Manila Bay

When the Spanish-American War broke out in 1898, Dewey's squadron engaged the Spanish Pacific Squadron at the Battle of Manila Bay.Dewey's forces destroyed the Spanish fleet, enabling the capture of the Philippines.

Return and Recognition

Dewey returned to the United States in 1899 as a hero.By an Act of Congress in 1903, he was given the rank of Admiral of the Navy, retroactive to 1899.

Presidential Candidacy

Dewey was considered a potential Democratic candidate for President of the United States in 1900.However, he withdrew from the campaign due to his wife's religious beliefs and outspoken views.

Military Ranks

During the Civil War, Dewey was promoted to lieutenant based on his assignment to Admiral David Farragut.He never held the ranks of ensign or junior lieutenant.
