Henry Brevoort: American Artist, Journalist, and Poet

Early Life and Education

Henry Brevoort was born into a military family, the son of Brigadier General Henry Brevoort. He attended the United States Military Academy at West Point, where he studied drawing under the tutelage of Robert Weir.

Military Service and Artistic Pursuits

In 1848, Brevoort embarked on a military expedition to newly acquired New Mexico and California with Kit Carson's unit. During this campaign, he created sketches and landscapes that captured the beauty of the American frontier.

Publishing and Artistic Legacy

Brevoort's military exploits led to the publication of his travelogue, "A Ride with Kit Carson through the Great American Desert and the Rocky Mountains," which was serialized in Harper's Magazine and published as a book in 1853. His artistic talent extended beyond his military sketches, as he also contributed to Harper's with essays and illustrations, including the famous "In the Buffalo Country," which depicted the thrilling hunt for bison.
