Early Life and Education
George Lindsey was born on December 17, 1928, in Jefferson County, Alabama, and grew up in the small town of Jasper. After graduating from high school, he attended Florence State College (now the University of North Alabama), where he studied biology and earned a bachelor's degree in 1952.
Military Service and Acting Ambitions
After college, Lindsey served in the Army at a military base in Puerto Rico. Upon his discharge, he enrolled at Hazel Green High School, where he decided to pursue an acting career.
Broadway and Television Breaks
In the late 1950s, Lindsey began performing on stage, appearing in Broadway productions of "Wonderful Town" and "All American." In 1962, he moved to Los Angeles and began landing small roles in television shows such as "The Rifleman," "The Twilight Zone," and "The Alfred Hitchcock Hour."
"The Andy Griffith Show" and Goober Pyle
Lindsey's breakthrough role came in 1964 when he was cast as Goober Pyle in "The Andy Griffith Show." The character of Goober, a lovable but dim-witted auto mechanic, became a fan favorite, and Lindsey's career became forever associated with him. While this role limited his acting range and typecast him as a "one-role actor," it also brought him immense popularity and the show's consistently high ratings.
Other Television and Film Roles
Despite his association with Goober, Lindsey appeared in numerous other television shows, including "Love, American Style," "MASH," "Movin' On," and "CHiPs." He also starred in full-length movies and did voiceover work. Notably, he provided voices for the characters Thomas O'Malley in "The Aristocats" (1970) and Br'er Rabbit in "Robin Hood" (1973).
Personal Life and Legacy
Lindsey was married to Joy Herbert from 1956 to 1991. They had two children: a son, George Lindsey Jr., and a daughter, Camden Jo Lindsey Gardner. Lindsey died on May 6, 2012, in Nashville, Tennessee, at the age of 83. He received numerous awards, including the Governor's Achievement Award from the state of Alabama in 1995 and the Minnie Pearl Lifetime Achievement Award in 2007. Lindsey also established the George Lindsey Academic Scholarships at the University of North Alabama, his alma mater. He was an avid golfer and hosted several charity tournaments. His autobiography, "Goober in a Nutshell," was published in 1995.
