Early Life and Artistic Training

Henri-Louis Julien Caen was born in France and studied painting under the renowned artists Alexandre Cabanel, Jean-Georges Vibert, and Édouard Detaille.

Debut and Stylistic Evolution

In 1878, Caen made his debut at the Paris Salon with his painting "Smoker from the Time of Louis XV." Throughout the following two decades, he continued to exhibit his elegant stylizations of 18th-century French history, particularly scenes from Parisian life.

Illustration and Literary Collaborations

Caen also gained prominence as a book illustrator. Notably, he created illustrations for Beaumarchais' "The Barber of Seville," Armand Silvestre's novel "Floreal" (1891), and works by Balzac.

Curatorship of the Musée Carnavalet

However, Caen achieved his greatest fame as the curator of the Musée Carnavalet, a museum dedicated to the history of Paris. He held this position from 1897 to 1914.
