Biography of Georges Charpak

Georges Charpak was a Polish-French physicist and the winner of the Nobel Prize in Physics in 1992. He was born in the Polish village of Dąbrowica (now Dubrovytsia, Ukraine) into a Polish-Jewish family, and his father's name was Jézi Harpak. When he was seven years old, his family moved from Poland to Paris. The French pronunciation rules transformed his last name, Charpak, into "Shar-pak".

Resistance during World War II

During World War II, Charpak participated in the Resistance Movement and in 1943, he was imprisoned by the Vichy regime authorities. In 1944, he was deported to the Nazi concentration camp of Dachau, where he remained until his liberation in 1945.

Educational Background

After completing his education at Lycée Montpellier in 1945, Charpak enrolled at the prestigious "École des Mines" in Paris, one of the top technical institutions in France. The following year, he became a naturalized citizen of France. In 1948, after graduating from "École des Mines", Charpak obtained a bachelor's degree in mining engineering and started working at the National Center for Scientific Research.

In 1954, Charpak earned his doctorate in nuclear physics from the Collège de France, where he worked in the laboratory of Frédéric Joliot-Curie. In 1959, he joined the team of researchers at the European Organization for Nuclear Research (CERN) in Geneva, and in 1984, he became a professor at the School for Advanced Studies in Physics and Chemistry in Paris.

Achievements and Recognition

In 1985, Charpak became a member of the French Academy of Sciences. In 1992, he was awarded the Nobel Prize in Physics "for the invention and development of particle detectors, in particular the multi-wire proportional chamber". Charpak was an active advocate for the use of nuclear energy and served as a member of the Board of Sponsors of the Bulletin of Atomic Scientists.

Georges Charpak's contributions to the field of physics and his groundbreaking inventions in particle detection have left a lasting impact on scientific research and have earned him international recognition.
