Early Life and Education
Georges Gillet was born on February 22, 1854. He was the brother of Ernest Gillet and the uncle and teacher of Fernand Gillet. After studying for only a year (1868-1869) under Charles Colin at the Paris Conservatory, Gillet won the Premier Prix, which was equivalent to a diploma for graduation.
Orchestral Career
Following his studies, Gillet played in the orchestra of the Paris Italian Opera, the Colonne Orchestra (1872-1876), the Orchestra of the Concert Society of the Paris Conservatory (1876-1899), and the orchestra of the Opéra Comique (1878-1895).
Paul Taffanel's Collaborator
Gillet was a close associate of Paul Taffanel in the "Société de musique de chambre pour instruments à vent" (Society for Chamber Music for Wind Instruments) from its founding in 1879. Along with Taffanel and clarinetist Charles Turban, he accompanied Camille Saint-Saëns on his St. Petersburg tour in 1887.
Teaching Legacy
Gillet taught at the Paris Conservatory from 1881 to 1918. He was a renowned professor and mentor, counting Marcel Tabuteau among his students.
Later Years and Legacy
Gillet passed away on May 29, 1920. He left behind a lasting legacy as one of the most celebrated oboists and music educators of his time, contributing significantly to the development of the instrument and the art of wind playing.
