Jāzeps Vītols

Jāzeps Vītols (1863-1948) was a renowned Latvian organist and music pedagogue.

Education and Early Career

Vītols graduated from the organ class of the Saint Petersburg Conservatory under the tutelage of Louis Homilius. From 1903 to 1907, he served as the conductor of the Riga Latvian Society Theater.

Latvian National Opera and Conservatory

In 1918, Vītols became the conductor of the Latvian National Opera. In 1919, he joined the faculty of the Latvian Conservatory as a professor of organ. He held this position until his death, serving as the conservatory's rector from 1935 to 1937.

Notable Students

Vītols mentored numerous notable students, including Marģers Zariņš and Leonīds Vigners.

Legacy

Vītols's legacy extends beyond his own musical accomplishments. His daughter, Aldona Vītola (1908-1991), served as the head of the Latvian Conservatory Library for over 60 years, contributing to the preservation and dissemination of musical knowledge.
