Early Life and Career Beginnings
Laura Bell is a young English middle-distance runner who has already made a significant mark on the sport. Born in London, Bell began her running career as a talented junior, winning the English Schools under-15 title in the 800 meters with a time of 2:08.81. This performance placed her eighth on the all-time UK rankings. She also won silver in the under-17 age group at the same championships in 2009.
Following her studies at Cardinal Vaughan Memorial School, Bell pursued a degree in Geography at the University of Birmingham. In 2015, after claiming the BUCS 800 meters indoor title and securing silver at the England Athletics Under-23 Championships, she took up training at the University of California, Berkeley.
Return to the UK and Breakthrough
Upon her return from the United States, Bell linked up with Shaftesbury Barnet Harriers and began training alongside fellow runner Keely Hodgkinson under the guidance of Jenny Meadows and Trevor Painter. In April 2023, she triumphed in the women's 30-34 age group at the World Duathlon Championships in Ibiza.
Throughout 2023, Bell continued to improve her personal bests over 1500m, 3000m, and 5000m on the track, while also setting a new PB in the 10km road race in Telford in December 2023.
International Success
Bell's breakthrough on the international stage came in 2024. In January, she set a new personal best in the 1500 meters with a time of 4:03.54, winning the bronze leg of the World Athletics Indoor Tour in Dortmund. The following week, Bell upset pre-race favorite Sembo Almayew to claim victory in the 3000 meters at Val-de-Reuil, setting another personal best time of 8:42.16. She lowered her personal best in the 1500 meters to 4:03.22 in Stockholm in February 2024.
On February 18, 2024, Bell won the 1500 meters at the 2024 British Athletics Indoor Championships in Birmingham, securing the British indoor title. She was selected to compete in the 2024 World Athletics Indoor Championships in Glasgow, where she reached the final of the women's 1500 meters with a time of 4:04.39. She finished fourth in the final with a time of 4:03.47.
Pre-Olympic Surge
In May 2024, Bell finished sixth in the 1500 meters at the Diamond League 2024 in Doha with a time of 4:03.72. In the same month, she also ran a personal best of 1:59.93 in the 800 meters in Andujar. Bell then set a personal best of 4:00.41 in the 1500 meters at the 2024 Prefontaine Classic in Eugene, Oregon.
Selected to represent Great Britain in the 1500 meters at the 2024 European Athletics Championships in Rome, Bell claimed a silver medal. Later that month, she won the 1500 meters at the 2024 British Athletics Championships in Manchester.
