Birth and Early Life
Georgios Vroutos was born in Athens, Greece, in 1843. Despite his family's financial struggles, he pursued an education in the arts.
Apprenticeship and Rome
Due to economic constraints, Vroutos discontinued his studies as a young man and became an apprentice in the workshop of sculptor Ioannis Kossos. After seven years of assisting Kossos, Vroutos received a government scholarship in 1866 and embarked on a journey to Rome. He enrolled in the Academy of Arts and graduated with top honors.
Return to Athens and Success
Vroutos returned to Athens in 1873 and took over Kossos' workshop, who had since passed away. He rose to prominence and gained recognition as a talented sculptor.
Professorship and Influence
In 1883, Vroutos was appointed professor of sculpture at the National Polytechnic Institute, succeeding renowned sculptor Leonidas Drosis. Among his students was notable Greek sculptor and artist Thomas Thomopoulos.
Legacy and Death
Vroutos left an enduring legacy through his students and his own artistic contributions. He passed away in Athens in 1909, leaving behind a rich artistic heritage.
