Georgi Asparuhov: A Bulgarian Football Legend
Early Career and Club SuccessGeorgi Asparuhov, widely regarded as one of Bulgaria's greatest footballers, rose to prominence as a striker for Levski Sofia and Botev Plovdiv. During his tenure at Levski from 1960-1961 and 1964-1971, he amassed 245 appearances and scored an impressive 150 goals.
European Cup Heroics
Asparuhov's performance in the 1965/66 European Cup against the formidable Benfica, featuring the legendary Eusébio, etched his name into football history. In the first match in Portugal, he scored both goals in a 2-2 draw. In the return leg, Asparuhov's hat-trick propelled Levski to a 3-2 victory, sending the Bulgarian club through to the next round. His exceptional display earned him widespread acclaim across Europe and a transfer offer from Benfica. However, the communist government denied permission for his move.
International Career
Asparuhov represented Bulgaria 50 times, scoring 19 goals. He also scored Bulgaria's only goal at the 1966 World Cup.
Tragic End
On June 30, 1971, Asparuhov and his talented teammate Nikola Kotkov were killed in a car accident. His funeral attracted an estimated 550,000 mourners, a testament to his immense popularity and legacy.
Legacy and Honors
Asparuhov was posthumously awarded the title of Bulgaria's Greatest Footballer of the 20th Century. His name lives on in Levski Sofia's stadium, the Georgi Asparuhov Stadium, and the annual Georgi Asparuhov Award, given to the best Bulgarian footballer.
