Early Life and Education
Gevorg Budagyan, an esteemed Armenian Soviet composer and conductor, was born on October 15, 1899, in Baku, then part of the Russian Empire. He commenced his musical journey in Moscow, where he graduated from the Moscow Conservatory in 1929, having studied conducting under the tutelage of Konstantin Saradzhev.
Academic Career
Following his graduation, Budagyan embarked on an illustrious academic career at the Yerevan Conservatory. From 1929, he served as a senior lecturer, became an associate professor in 1934, and attained the rank of professor in 1950. Moreover, he held prestigious positions as pro-rector (1949-1958) and head of the Department of History and Theory of Music (1958-1960). Under his meticulous guidance, an academic edition of Alexander Spendiarov's complete works was published.
Musical Leadership
Budagyan played a pivotal role in the establishment and success of the A.A. Spendiarov Opera and Ballet Theatre, serving as one of its founders and principal conductors from 1932 to 1958. Notably, he directed the inaugural production of the opera "Almast" in 1933, marking the official opening of the theater. Budagyan's musical prowess also extended to ballet, as he choreographed "Khanut" in 1945, utilizing music from Spendiarov's composition. This ballet was based on the esteemed epic "David of Sasun."
Legacy and Influence
Throughout his illustrious career, Gevorg Budagyan made indelible contributions to Armenian music. He not only fostered budding musicians through his academic endeavors but also showcased the beauty and power of Armenian music through his conducting and compositions. Sadly, Budagyan passed away in Yerevan in 1978, leaving behind a vibrant musical legacy that continues to inspire and captivate audiences to this day.
