Early Life and Education
Armenian Soviet ballet dancer, choreographer, and pedagogue, Vanik Stepanovich Vardanian, was born on July 11 (24), 1912, in Astrakhan, Russia. In 1938, he graduated from the Baku Choreographic School, where he was trained by renowned instructors V. Ermolaev and G. I. Yazvinsky.
Professional Career
Vardanian began his career as a ballet dancer in 1932 with the Saratov Opera and Ballet Theater. He then performed with the Tashkent Theater from 1933 to 1935 and the Akhundov Theater from 1935 to 1938. In 1938, he joined the troupe of the Spendiarov State Academic Opera and Ballet Theatre, where he remained until 1962. During this period, he emerged as one of the most celebrated dancers in Armenia.
Teaching and Choreography
From 1960 to 1962, Vardanian served as a rehearsal instructor at the Spendiarov Theater. In 1973, he became the principal choreographer of the Yerevan Ice Ballet. He also taught dance extensively, shaping the careers of countless aspiring ballet dancers.
Personal Life
Vanik Vardanian was married to Pavline Aramovna Burnazian, a distinguished ballerina and Honored Artist of the Armenian SSR.
Recognition and Legacy
In 1946, Vardanian was awarded the title of Honored Artist of the Armenian SSR in recognition of his exceptional contributions to the art of ballet. His legacy as a dancer, choreographer, and pedagogue continues to inspire and influence future generations of artists in Armenia and beyond.
