Biography of Georgy Kholodny
Georgy Kholodny was born on May 1, 1919, in the village of Batevo, currently in the Priazovsky district of the Zaporizhzhia region, into a working-class family. He completed eight grades of education and worked as a lathe operator at a factory in Melitopol. In 1939, he joined the ranks of the Red Army.
Military Career
In 1940, Kholodny graduated from the Kachinskaya Military Aviation School for Pilots. He began his active service in October 1941 as a sergeant. In August 1943, he served in the 248th Fighter Aviation Regiment, flying I-16, Yak-1, and Yak-7 aircraft. By February 1944, he was transferred to the 133rd Fighter Aviation Regiment, flying Yak-9 planes. In August 1944, he returned to the 248th Fighter Aviation Regiment. In February 1945, he joined the 157th Fighter Aviation Regiment. For the remainder of the war, he served once again in the 133rd Fighter Aviation Regiment. During his service, Kholodny flew a total of 245 successful combat missions and engaged in 45 aerial battles, personally shooting down 19 enemy aircraft and 1 in a group. According to research by M. Yu. Bykov, there is evidence in operational documents confirming 17 personal victories and 2 group victories.
Post-War Service and Achievements
After the war, Kholodny continued to serve in the Air Force. On May 15, 1946, he was awarded the title of Hero of the Soviet Union for his courage and military valor demonstrated in battles with enemies. In 1949, he completed the Higher Officer Flight and Tactical Courses, and in 1954, the Central Air Force Officer Training School. He participated in the armed conflict on the Korean Peninsula from 1950 to 1953. As the commander of the 878th Fighter Aviation Regiment (216th Fighter Aviation Division), Major G. S. Kholodny personally shot down 2 enemy aircraft in aerial combat.
Later Life and Legacy
In 1961, Georgy Kholodny retired as a Lieutenant Colonel and lived and worked in the city of Novocherkassk, Rostov Oblast. He was awarded the Orders of Lenin, Red Banner (thrice), Patriotic War 1st and 2nd Class, and the Red Star (twice), as well as various medals for his service. He passed away on February 26, 1985.
