Early Life and Acting Beginnings

Born on the rare February 29th in Paris, Gérard Darmon's Sephardic Jewish parents hailed from Algeria (his father) and Oran (his mother). Growing up in the 14th arrondissement's Rue des Artistes, Darmon felt the call of acting at just 10 years old. After dropping out of school in his senior year, he joined a Zionist youth organization and spent four months in an Israeli kibbutz. Upon returning to Paris, Darmon studied under Bernard Bemon and auditioned unsuccessfully for the National Conservatory of Dramatic Arts in 1972. Undeterred, he spent the next decade performing in Parisian cabaret theaters, often forming a duo with Jean-Pierre Bacri.

Breakthrough and Film Career

Darmon's film debut came in 1973's "The Adventures of Rabbi Jacob," where he played a henchman to Colonel Farès alongside Louis de Funès. He went on to star in Claude Lelouch's "For Us Two" (1979) and Bertrand Blier's "Our Story" (1984), which won two César Awards. Darmon's role as Eddie in the Oscar- and Golden Globe-nominated erotic drama "37°2 le Matin" cemented his status as a leading man.

'Passport' and International Recognition

Darmon's career reached new heights with his portrayal of the brothers Merab and Yakov Papashvili in Georgy Danelia's 1990 comedy-drama "Passport." Despite initial plans to cast Vakhtang Kikabidze, American actor Nicolas Cage was considered but demanded an exorbitant fee. Darmon ultimately landed the roles, showcasing the character's physical and emotional transformation through arduous experiences.

Subsequent Film and TV Roles

In the years that followed, Darmon starred in "For Sasha" (1991), "Wasabi" (2002), "The Libertines" (2004), "Callas and Onassis" (2005), and "Together or Nothing" (2013). He also played himself in Claude Lelouch's 2021 film "Love Is Better Than Life," the late Robert Hossein's final performance.

Music Career

In 2003, Darmon embarked on a singing career, releasing three albums and performing in prestigious venues, including the Olympia.

Personal Life

Darmon met Nicole Recoules during acting classes in 1966. They married in 1968 and welcomed their daughter Virginie that same year. Their marriage ended when Darmon fell in love with actress Anaïs Jeanneret.

From 1994 to 1999, Darmon was in a relationship with actress Mathilde Seigner, with whom he had two children: daughter Sarah and son Jules. His first grandson, Tom, was born a year after Jules' arrival.

Darmon has been married to Christine Darmon since 2014. They welcomed daughter Léna in August 2017.

Recent Work and Legacy

Darmon continues to act in film and television. He recently appeared in "Unbreakable" (2022), "The Lion King: Simba" (2023), and "Asterix and Obelix: The Middle Kingdom" (2023), where he voiced the narrator.

As a veteran performer with an acclaimed body of work, Gérard Darmon remains an iconic figure in French cinema and beyond.
