Early Life and Education

Born in Paris in 1935, Gérard Henri de Vaucouleurs completed his studies at the University of Paris in 1935.

Research Career

Observational Astronomy

From 1945 to 1950, Vaucouleurs worked at the Astrophysical Institute in Paris. He subsequently held positions at the Australian National University (1951-1954), the Yale-Columbia Southern Station in Australia (1954-1957), the Lowell Observatory in Arizona (1957-1958), and the Harvard Observatory (1958-1960). In 1960, he joined the faculty of the University of Texas, becoming a professor in 1965.

Vaucouleurs made significant contributions to our understanding of Mars. Through visual and photographic observations, he tracked changes in the surface features and estimated optical and atmospheric conditions. His observations in 1959 provided estimates of Mars' upper atmospheric temperature.

Galactic and Extragalactic Astronomy

Vaucouleurs developed a highly detailed classification system for galaxy types based on their photographic images. His system led to the compilation of three extensive catalogs, the last of which included 4364 objects.

He also studied the Milky Way galaxy, discovering a weak resemblance to a bar structure in its central region. Additionally, Vaucouleurs focused on the nearby Magellanic Clouds, estimating their properties and establishing the rotation of the Large Magellanic Cloud.

Supergalactic Structures

Vaucouleurs proposed that nearby galaxies formed a vast system (supercluster or supergalaxy) centered on the Virgo cluster. According to his theory, this cloud is flattened and rotates.

Publications and Recognition

Vaucouleurs authored several influential books, including "Physics of the Planet Mars" (1951), "Astronomical Photography" (1961), and "A Survey of the Universe" (co-authored with D. H. Menzel and F. L. Whipple).

He received numerous awards, including the Herschel Medal of the Royal Astronomical Society (1980) and the Henry Norris Russell Prize (1988).
