Early Life and Education

Jean-Pierre Bel (born June 6, 1945) is a French politician who has served as President of the French Senate since 2014. He is a member of the conservative party The Republicans (formerly Union for a Popular Movement). Bel received a medical degree specializing in veterinary medicine.

Political Career

Bel entered politics in 1983 when he was elected mayor of Rambouillet, a position he held until 2014 with a brief interruption from 2004 to 2007. From 1985 to 1989, he served as a regional councilor in Île-de-France. He has represented the Yvelines department in the Senate since 1986 (except for 2004-2005).

In 1997, Bel became vice president of the Senate, a position he held until 2001. He served as Minister of Labor from 2004 to 2005 and as Minister of Employment, Labor, and Youth Employment from 2005 to 2007.

Presidency of the Senate

Bel was elected President of the Senate on October 1, 2008, defeating Socialist candidate Jean-Pierre Chevènement. He served in this role until 2011 when he lost reelection to Chevènement. On October 1, 2014, Bel was re-elected to the presidency, receiving 194 votes.
