Gerasim Ilyich Lapin: A Soldier's Courage
In the midst of the colossal struggle known as the Great Patriotic War, Gerasim Ilyich Lapin emerged as a symbol of extraordinary valor and tenacity.
Conscription and Early War Service
On July 10, 1943, Lapin, a young man from Novosibirsk, joined the Red Army. By September 5th, he was deployed to the front lines as a rifleman in the 8th Company of the 718th Regiment, 139th Rifle Division.
The Battle of Hill 224.1
On September 13-14, 1943, Lapin's unit engaged in a fierce battle for Hill 224.1 near the village of Rubezhenka. Against overwhelming odds, a mere 18 soldiers from the 718th Regiment held their ground against an estimated 200 German infantrymen.
Miracle Amidst Tragedy
As the battle raged, Lapin and fellow sergeant Konstantin Vlasov were severely wounded and concussed. Miraculously, they managed to survive the onslaught. Vlasov was captured but escaped to join the partisans, while Lapin was discovered among the dead by advancing Soviet troops. He miraculously regained consciousness and rejoined the 139th Division.
Immortal Legacy
The epic struggle on Hill 224.1 was immortalized in the poignant song "On the Nameless Hilltop" by composer Veniamin Basner and poet Mikhail Matusovsky. Though Lapin was initially thought to have perished, he had in fact survived and later joined the ranks of the heroes.
Post-War Life and Remembrance
After the war, Lapin returned to his hometown of Donetsk, where he played an active role in its reconstruction. In recognition of his extraordinary courage, he was awarded a second Order of the Patriotic War First Degree in 1985.
