Early Career
Atletico MineiroGetulio Vargas, a Brazilian right-wing midfielder, began his footballing journey at the tender age of 14, joining the youth academy of Atletico Mineiro. His professional debut came in 1970, when he played a friendly match against Curvelio on September 7th. Over the subsequent years, he made several appearances in friendlies and was frequently included in the team's squad.
In 1972, Getulio finally broke into the club's official matches, initially playing as a center-forward. However, coach Barbatana moved him to the right wing of midfield to make way for rising attacking star Reinaldo. During his five years at Atletico, Getulio amassed 205 appearances and scored 27 goals, contributing to the club's victory in the Minas Gerais State Championship in 1976 and two Minas Gerais Cups.
São Paulo
Getulio's career reached its peak at São Paulo, where he transferred in 1977. He made his debut on September 1st and, by the end of the year, had claimed the Brazilian Championship title with the club. Notably, the victory was secured in an away match against his former team, Atletico Mineiro. Getulio also won two Paulista Championships with São Paulo, in 1980 and 1981, playing a total of 323 matches and scoring 34 goals during his seven years at the club.
Fluminense and Hollywood Kickers
In 1984, Getulio moved to Rio de Janeiro to join Fluminense. He spent two years at "Flu," winning two Carioca Championships before embarking on a brief stint in the United States with Hollywood Kickers, where he ended his playing career.
Return to Atletico Mineiro and Coaching
Upon returning to Brazil from the United States, Getulio spent two more years in the country before returning to Atletico Mineiro as a youth team coach for 14-year-olds. He held this role for 13 years, mentoring several talented players, including Lincoln, Renato, Rodrigo Dias, and Rafael Miranda. However, in 2003, Getulio and other former players were dismissed due to a political decision by the state government prohibiting former players from working in the club's youth set-up.
Post-Football Life
Today, Getulio works at the Curumim school, where he mentors troubled youth, helping them overcome their past offenses and become responsible citizens.
