Gheorghe Alexianu: A Life of Repression and Infamy
Early Life and EducationGheorghe Alexianu was born in Romania and began his studies at the University of Bucharest in 1915. However, upon Romania's entry into World War I, he volunteered for the army in 1916.
Academic Career
After demobilization from the war, Alexianu resumed his studies and later taught history and philosophy at a high school in Râmnicu Vâlcea. In 1925, he earned a doctorate in law from the University of Bucharest. From 1927 to 1938, he served as a professor of public law at the University of Chernivtsi.
Political Rise
In 1938, Alexianu was appointed royal resident of the Câmpulung County, with his seat in Câmpulung Moldovenesc. On February 1, 1939, he was transferred to the same position in the Bucharest County.
Governor of Transnistria
On August 19, 1941, Romanian Prime Minister Ion Antonescu appointed Alexianu as the governor of the Transnistria province, an occupied area of Soviet territory.
Repressive Policies
As governor of Transnistria, Alexianu implemented repressive policies, leading to the deaths of hundreds of thousands of Jews and the forced labor of tens of thousands of Ukrainians. He also implemented a program of Romanianization, banning the public use of the Ukrainian language and music.
Post-War Trial and Execution
After the overthrow of the Antonescu regime, Alexianu was arrested and put on trial. He was sentenced to death and executed alongside Antonescu and two others on June 1, 1946.
