Gholamreza Aghazadeh was born on March 15, 1949, in Khoy, West Azerbaijan Province, Iran. In 1950, his family relocated to Tehran, where he enrolled at the University of Tehran. He graduated with a bachelor's degree in Mathematics and Computer Science.
Political Career Post-Revolution
After the 1979 Islamic Revolution, Aghazadeh held various government positions, including Director of the daily newspaper Islamic Republic, Deputy Foreign Minister for Administration and Financial Affairs, Minister without Portfolio for Executive Affairs, and Minister of Petroleum.
Minister of Petroleum
As Minister of Petroleum, Aghazadeh played a key role in managing Iran's oil sector, which is ranked third in global exports. He served for 12 years, from 1985 to 1997.
President of the Atomic Energy Organization of Iran
In 1997, Aghazadeh became the President of the Atomic Energy Organization of Iran (AEOI), succeeding Reza Amrollahi. His appointment was reaffirmed by newly elected President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad in August 2005.
