Biography of Jaume Aragall

Jaume Aragall i Garriga, better known as Jaume Aragall, was born on June 6, 1939, in Barcelona, Spain. He is a Spanish-Catalan lyric tenor who has received numerous awards, including the honorary title of "Kammersänger" from the Vienna State Opera.

Early Life and Training

Aragall began his musical education in Barcelona under the guidance of Jaime Francisco Puig. He then received a scholarship from the Gran Teatre del Liceu opera house to further his talent in Milan with maestro Vladimir Badiali.

Operatic Career

In 1963, Aragall won the "Voci Verdi" competition in Busseto and made his debut on the stage of Teatro La Fenice in Giuseppe Verdi's opera "Gerusalemme." He also debuted at the prestigious La Scala in Milan in the leading role of Pietro Mascagni's opera "L'amico Fritz."

Throughout his career, Aragall performed in various opera houses around the world, including Budapest, Venice, Genoa, Palermo, Parma, Modena, Naples, Rome, and Turin. He gained international recognition for his portrayal of Romeo in Bellini's "I Capuleti e i Montecchi" at La Scala, sharing the stage with Renata Scotto and Luciano Pavarotti.

Aragall's repertoire expanded to include roles such as the Duke of Mantua in Verdi's "Rigoletto" at Verona, Covent Garden, and the Metropolitan Opera. He also performed in other renowned operas such as "Lucia di Lammermoor," "Madama Butterfly," "La Traviata," and "Werther."

In addition to his mainstream repertoire, Aragall also took on rare operas like Jules Massenet's "Esclarmonde" and Gaetano Donizetti's "Caterina Cornaro" with Montserrat Caballé.

Accomplishments and Legacy

Jaume Aragall received several awards in recognition of his talent, including the honorary title of "Kammersänger" from the Vienna State Opera. Despite his beautiful voice, he limited his interactions with the media due to his shyness and stage fright, which somewhat hindered the development of his singing and recording career.

In 1994, Aragall initiated the "Concurso Internacional de Canto Jaume Aragall," an international singing competition.
