Early Career
Giacomo Ricci began his racing career in 2001 in Formula BMW ADAC, competing in the German-based series for two seasons and achieving a best finish of 10th in the championship. He also participated in a single Italian Formula Renault race in 2001 and competed in select rounds of the German Formula Renault 2.0 series and the Formula Renault Eurocup in 2002.
Spanish Formula Junior 1600
In 2003, Ricci moved to the junior-level Spanish Formula Junior 1600 series, finishing the season in fourth place. He also participated in a single Formula Renault race in North America.
World Series by Nissan and Euro Formula 3000
From 2004 to 2007, Ricci competed in the series known as Euro Formula 3000, Italian Formula 3000, and Euroseries 3000. After failing to score points in 2004, he improved his results to finish third in 2005. In 2006, he landed a seat with Fisichella Motorsport and won the championship with five victories and 13 podium finishes.
Champ Car Atlantic
In 2007, Ricci spent a season in Champ Car Atlantic (the support series for the defunct Champ Car World Series) with Conquest Racing. He finished sixth in the championship despite not recording any wins or podiums. He placed third among rookies for 2007, behind Franck Perera and Robert Wickens.
GP2 Series
Ricci was invited to compete in the GP2 Series in 2008, replacing the injured Michael Herck in the David Price Racing team for the first few races of the championship. He partnered with Brazilian Diego Nunes. He was replaced after two rounds by Andy Soucek, who was in turn replaced by the now-recovered Herck.
International GT Open and Trident Racing
The Italian competed in the first round of the 2008-09 GP2 Asia season for Trident Racing. Later replaced by Alberto Valerio, he returned to DPR for the second round, replacing Yuhi Sekiguchi. Ricci also competed in the GTA and GTS classes of the International GT Open championship in 2008.
