Biography of Gian Carlo Menotti

Gian Carlo Menotti was an Italian-American composer and librettist, widely regarded as one of the most prominent opera composers of the 20th century.

Early Life and Education

Menotti was born on July 7, 1911, in Cadegliano, near Milan, Italy. In 1923, he enrolled at the Milan Conservatory and at the age of 17, he received a scholarship to study composition at the Curtis Institute of Music in Philadelphia, USA.

Operatic Career

Menotti completed his studies at the Curtis Institute in 1933 and the same year, he finished his first opera, "Amelia goes to the Ball," which was premiered at the Metropolitan Opera in 1938. Some of his other notable operas include "The Old Maid and the Thief" (1939), commissioned by NBC; "The Medium" (1946); "The Consul" (1950), which won the Pulitzer Prize and was translated into 12 languages; and "Help! Help! The Globolinks Are Coming" (1968), an opera about extraterrestrial beings.

Other Works

In addition to his operas, Menotti also composed music in other genres. He wrote the libretto for Samuel Barber's opera "Vanessa" (1958) and his dramatic play, "A Copy of Madame Aupic," was successfully staged in Paris in 1959. Menotti's works also include orchestral suites, concertos, and a dramatic cantata titled "The Death of the Bishop of Brindisi" (1963).

Multi-Faceted Career

Menotti was a versatile artist who engaged in various artistic endeavors. He taught composition, directed films, and wrote screenplays. In 1958, he founded the "Festival dei Due Mondi" (Festival of Two Worlds) in the Italian city of Spoleto. Since 1974, Menotti has been living in Scotland.
