Early Life and Training
Giulio Romano was an Italian sculptor and medalist of the High Renaissance period. He may have been a pupil of Andrea Bregno. His earliest known works were created for the Palazzo Ducale in Urbino (before 1482).
Career in Various Courts
Romano subsequently worked for the courts of Ferrara and Mantua, where Isabella d'Este admired his creations. In 1491, he relocated to Milan at the invitation of her brother-in-law Ludovico Sforza, who commissioned him to create the tomb of Gian Galeazzo Visconti (Certosa di Pavia), a collaboration with Benedetto Briosco.
Return to Isabella d'Este and Papal Patronage
After the fall of the Sforza dynasty in 1499, Romano returned to the court of Isabella d'Este. He later worked in Rome under Pope Julius II, as well as in Naples, Cremona, and again in Milan and Urbino.
