Biography of Mark di Suvero
Mark di Suvero is an American sculptor known for his large-scale steel sculptures. Born on September 18, 1933, in Shanghai, China, he immigrated to the United States with his father in 1941.
Early Life and Education
Di Suvero attended San Francisco City College from 1953 to 1954 and then went on to study at the University of California, Santa Barbara from 1954 to 1955. He later transferred to the University of California, Berkeley, where he pursued a B.A. in Philosophy and graduated in 1957.
Artistic Journey
After moving to New York City, Di Suvero became influenced by abstract expressionism. However, his artistic focus shifted after a serious accident on a construction site, where he was severely injured by a falling elevator. During his rehabilitation, he learned how to weld and began creating large sculptures using salvaged materials, such as railroad ties, scrap metal, and construction beams. Many of his early works incorporated elements that could swing or rotate, adding a sense of movement to the sculptures.
Artistic Style and Achievements
Di Suvero's unique sculptural aesthetic combined industrial materials with kinetic elements, reminiscent of the work of Robert Rauschenberg and the aesthetics of junk art. He co-founded the Park Place Gallery and ConStruct, two galleries owned by artists. Other notable members included John Raymond Henry, Kenneth Snelson, Lyman Kipp, and Charles Ginnever.
By 1966, di Suvero had gained recognition in the American art scene. In 1976, he represented the United States at the Sydney Biennale, further solidifying his international reputation as one of the most prominent American sculptors working with steel on a large scale.
Career Shift
By the mid-1970s, di Suvero shifted his artistic approach, creating sculptures that were more restrained, using fewer elements and materials, and relying more on steel blocks. This marked a departure from his earlier works, which featured a combination of found materials and steel beams.
Mark di Suvero's innovative and influential sculptures continue to be celebrated and exhibited worldwide. His contributions to the field of sculpture have left a lasting impact, firmly establishing him as one of the most renowned American sculptors of his time.
