Playing CareerJosé Augusto Torres was a legendary Portuguese footballer who played for Benfica for a decade. During his time with Benfica, he scored 175 goals in 369 matches. As a key member of the team, he achieved remarkable success, becoming an eight-time Portuguese league champion and three-time Portuguese Cup winner. Notably, Torres was part of the historic Benfica side that won the European Cup (now UEFA Champions League) twice in 1961 and 1962.
International Career
José Augusto Torres represented Portugal at the international level, playing 45 matches and scoring 9 goals from 1958 to 1968. One of his career highlights was participating in the 1966 FIFA World Cup, where Portugal achieved a third-place finish.
Coaching Career
After retiring from playing, Torres ventured into coaching. In 1972, he was appointed as the head coach of the Portugal national team, but his tenure lasted only a year. He later managed several Portuguese clubs, including Vitória Setúbal, Barreirense, Portimonense, Farense, Penafiel, and Logroñés in Spain.
International Coaching
Torres' coaching experience also extended beyond Portugal. He coached the Moroccan clubs Kawkab and Fath Rabat, demonstrating his versatility and ability to adapt to different football cultures.
