Biography of Gianfranco Fini
Gianfranco Fini was born on January 3, 1952, in Bologna, Italy. At the age of 15, he joined the neo-fascist Italian Social Movement (ISM) and made a brilliant career within the organization. In 1977, he became the national secretary of the youth league of the Movement. Fini holds a degree in pedagogy and psychology.
A Controversial Candidate
In 1988, Fini organized a triumphant reception for the visiting leader of the French nationalists, Jean-Marie Le Pen. After the resignation of the head of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Gianni De Michelis, Italian Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi took control of the ministry and planned to rebuild it. This process would take several months, after which Gianfranco Fini was expected to take the position of the minister. However, his candidacy was controversial.
Opposition to the Euro
While the rest of Europe transitioned to the single currency, the euro, Fini remained a fervent opponent. This situation created panic among European states that had adopted the euro, especially considering that Italy was soon to assume the presidency of the European Union.
Political Career and Affiliations
Fini's political career has been closely associated with Silvio Berlusconi. In the government formed in May 2001, he served as the deputy prime minister. His party, with the football-inspired name "Forward, Italy!", was an important component of Berlusconi's ruling right-centrist coalition, the House of Freedom.
