Early Life and Education

Gideon Saks was born on January 15, 1960, in Israel to a South African father and a Scottish mother. Growing up in South Africa, he initially aspired to become an actor and left school at age 16. However, he auditioned for the Little Theatre's drama school under Mavis Taylor, who advised him to focus on singing until he turned 18. Saks then studied music with Angelo Gobatto at the South African College of Music.

Musical Beginnings in Europe

To avoid conscription in South Africa, Saks moved to the UK at age 22, enrolling at the Royal Northern College of Music. While there, he began designing sets for student productions, including "Happy End" and "Der fliegende Holländer." He made his professional debut with the Canadian Opera Company in "The Mikado." Saks subsequently sang leading roles in opera houses across Europe, including the Zurich Opera, Musiktheater im Revier, and Bielefeld Opera. His experiences in these smaller theaters honed his craft.

International Recognition

Saks's performances began to attract international attention, leading to invitations to sing in Berlin and beyond. He has graced the stages of prestigious opera houses such as the Royal Opera House, Covent Garden; Paris Opera; San Francisco Opera; and Vienna State Opera. His extensive repertoire includes major roles in operas by Beethoven, Wagner, and Puccini.

Founding Opera Garden

Beyond his performing career, Saks founded and is the artistic director of Opera Garden, an opera project within the Aberdeen International Youth Festival. He also conducts vocal masterclasses worldwide and is a visiting professor at the Royal Conservatory of Ghent.

Later Years

Gideon Saks continues to perform regularly on the international opera circuit. He has also become a highly sought-after vocal coach and educator, sharing his expertise with aspiring singers around the globe. His passion for music and commitment to excellence have made him a respected figure in the opera world.
