Rosalie Léonore Constance Castel was born on October 26, 1819, in Beaujeu, France. She received vocal lessons from Adolphe Nourrit, studied at the Paris Conservatory under Laura Cinti-Damore, and trained in Milan with Giulio Marco Bordogni.

Early Career: Debut and Performance at the Paris Opera

Castel made her debut in 1844 in London at concerts with the Philharmonic Society while still a student. Her first major role was as Bertha in Giacomo Meyerbeer's "Le Prophète" at the Paris Opera in 1849, where she premiered an additional aria written by Meyerbeer at her request.

Notable Performances in London

Castel's career flourished in London, where she sang the title role in Gaetano Donizetti's "Lucia di Lammermoor" and Gliceria in Charles Gounod's "Sapho" at the Covent Garden Theatre. She also performed as Cunigonde in Louis Spohr's "Faust" there.

Career in Lisbon

In the latter years of her career, Castel became a prima donna at the Lisbon Opera, where she enjoyed great success until her untimely death in 1858.
