Early Life and Education
Gediminas Petružis was born in Lithuania and began his educational pursuits in 1970 when he completed evening school for working youth in Klaipėda. In 1976, he graduated from the Faculty of Mechanics at the Kaunas Polytechnic Institute, earning a degree in mechanical engineering. Continuing his education, Petružis received a qualification as a teacher of political science from the Higher Party School in Vilnius in 1989.
Political Career
Petružis's political career began in 1976 when he became an instructor for the Klaipėda City Committee of the Communist Party of Lithuania. He rose through the ranks, serving as deputy secretary from 1983 and as secretary of the party committee for the Klaipėda Base of the Ocean Fishing Fleet from 1985. In 1989, he was appointed head of the personnel and educational institutions department of the Lithuanian Shipping Company.
From 1989 to 1990, Petružis served as the first secretary of the Klaipėda City Committee of the Communist Party of Lithuania. In 1990, he co-founded the Democratic Labor Party of Lithuania, becoming a member of its Presidium and the chairman of its Klaipėda Council. Petružis held several elected positions, including deputy of the Klaipėda City Council (1993-1995), representative of the Government of the Republic of Lithuania in the Klaipėda District (1993-1997), and deputy of the Council of the Klaipėda City Municipality (1995).
Business Endeavors
In 1997, Petružis took on commercial ventures as deputy director of the insurance brokerage company "Gairepa." From 2001 to 2003, he became the director of the company. Additionally, he served as deputy director of the construction company "Lokys" from 2003 to 2008.
Return to Politics
Petružis returned to active politics in 2005 as deputy chairman of the Socialist Party of Lithuania and chairman of its Klaipėda branch. In 2006, he was elected chairman of the party at its VII Congress. He continued to hold leadership positions, including general director of the enterprise "Stabilios konstrukcijos" from 2007 to 2008.
In 2009, Petružis became an honorary member of the International Union of Young Farmers. He was also appointed director of the International Institute of Political Science and elected chairman of the Lithuanian Association for Security and Cooperation in Europe. In December 2009, he joined the council of the party "Socialist People's Front," a merger of the Socialist Party of Lithuania and the "Front" party.
Academic Pursuits
Throughout his career, Petružis continued to engage in academic pursuits. He taught history and economic geography at the 5th Klaipėda Secondary School from 1989 to 1991. From 2001 to 2003, he taught at the Klaipėda Shipbuilding and Ship Repair School. He also spent a year as a lecturer at the Kaunas Business and Technology School (2003-2004).
Other Interests and Accomplishments
Beyond his political and academic pursuits, Petružis has had a lifelong interest in sports, particularly classical wrestling and football. He served as chairman of the Klaipėda Football Federation from 1985 to 1988 and as deputy chairman of the football federation of the Lithuanian SSR from 1988 to 1989. Petružis is also known for his self-education in history, political science, and culture. He has authored and co-authored scholarly articles and publications on historical, political, and cultural topics.
