Biography of Giant Bernard
Born on November 14, 1973, in Peabody, Massachusetts, USA, Matt Bloom (also known as Mongol, Albert, Prince Albert, A-Train, Giant Bernard, and more) is a wrestler currently performing in New Japan Pro Wrestling. From 1997 to 2004, he was a wrestler in World Wrestling Entertainment. Giant Bernard is his most recent ring name.
Early Life and Sports Career
Matt Bloom attended school where he participated in football, basketball, track and field, and baseball. Even after enrolling in the University of Pittsburgh, he continued playing American football. In 1996, Bloom graduated from the university, specializing in sign language for the deaf and played for the San Diego Chargers in the National Football League for a period of time. However, he eventually found his true calling in professional wrestling.
Wrestling Career
While working as a teacher, Matt Bloom took three of his students to a wrestling tournament as a reward and realized his long-time dream of becoming a wrestler. He encountered Killer Kowalski, a wrestling trainer, who invited him to join his wrestling school. Leaving his teaching career behind, Bloom embarked on his journey as a wrestler.
In 1997, Bloom made his debut in the wrestling ring and caught the attention of World Wrestling Federation agent Tom Prichard. He signed a contract with the organization and trained further before competing in Power Pro Wrestling in Tennessee. In this league, he won the Young Guns Championship for rookies and became the Heavyweight Champion.
In 1999, Bloom began performing in World Wrestling Federation / Entertainment under the name Prince Albert. He was part of a trio called "The Pierced Pals" for a period of time. He teamed up with different wrestlers such as Droz and Big Bossman. In 2000, he changed his name to Albert and mainly participated in group matches. In April 2001, he joined the team called "X-Factor" with wrestlers Justin Credible and X-Pac. The team disbanded later in the year.
Throughout his career, Bloom participated in various matches and feuds, appearing in events such as SummerSlam, WrestleMania XIX, Survivor Series, Royal Rumble, and more.
In June 2004, known as A-Train, Bloom suffered an injury and was released from his WWE contract by November, before fully recovering. He briefly performed in Impact Zone Wrestling under the name Train in late 2004. In March 2005, he joined the Japanese league All Japan Pro Wrestling (AJPW) and adopted the ring name Giant Bernard. He became a member of the "Voodoo Murders" team and competed in the Triple Crown Heavyweight Championship tournament, but did not emerge as the winner.
In January 2006, Bloom transitioned to New Japan Pro Wrestling (NJPW), winning the New Japan Cup finals. He challenged IWGP Heavyweight Champion Brock Lesnar but was unsuccessful. In March 2007, Bloom and Travis Tomko won the IWGP Tag Team Championship and held the title until February 2008.
Apart from NJPW, Bloom also wrestled in the Wrestle Land division under the name Rusher Road.
Personal Life
Since 2005, Matt Bloom has been married to Farah Bloom. He has a passion for piercings, with a total of 28 piercings, the first of which he got at the age of fourteen. Recently, he has developed an interest in tattoos, adding Kanji characters on his thighs to complement the tribal tattoos on his chest and arms, matching those of his tag team partner, Tomko.
