Early Career: From Candy to Kill For ThrillsGilby Clarke's musical journey began in the mid-eighties when he replaced Geoff "Rexx" Siegel as guitarist for the band Candy. He later left Candy to form the metal band Kill For Thrills, which released an EP, "Commercial Suicide," and a full-length album, "Dynamite from Nightmareland," before disbanding.
Joining Guns N' Roses: The "Use Your Illusion" Era
In 1991, Clarke joined Guns N' Roses as their new rhythm guitarist after Izzy Stradlin abruptly left the band. He toured extensively with the group during their "Use Your Illusion" tour, from November 1991 to 1993. On the tour, Clarke was often introduced by Axl Rose during the performance of "Wild Horses," a cover of The Rolling Stones song.
Post-Guns N' Roses: Solo Career and Collaborations
After leaving Guns N' Roses, Clarke released his debut solo album, "Pawnshop Guitars," in 1994. He has since recorded three more solo albums: "The Hangover" (1997), "Rubber" (1998), and "Swag" (2002), as well as a live album, "Live 99." Additionally, he has collaborated with artists such as Slash's Snakepit, Heart, Nancy Sinatra, and members of Metallica and Mötley Crüe in the supergroup Rock Star Supernova.
Production Work and Guest Appearances
Clarke has also established himself as a producer, working on albums for bands such as L.A. Guns, Bullets and Octane, The Bronx, and Vains of Jenna. He appeared as a guest on L.A. Guns' album "Shrinking Violet," which he also produced. Clarke was also the producer for The Bronx's self-titled debut album and Girlsplayboys' "From Ritual to Romance."
Rock Star Supernova and Legal Battles
In 2006, Clarke participated as a judge on the reality show "Rock Star: Supernova," which aimed to form a new band. The show's producers initially named the winning band "Supernova," but this name was already in use by another California band. The original Supernova filed a lawsuit, resulting in a court injunction that prevented the reality show from using the name. As a result, the band became known as "Rock Star Supernova."
Later Career: Touring and Zemaitis Guitars
Clarke continues to tour as a solo artist, often with his backing band including Muddy Stardust and Dennis Morehouse. He is known for his preference for custom-made Zemaitis guitars.
