Cardinal Julius Darmaatmadja, S.J.
Early Life and EducationJulius Darmaatmadja was born in Muntilan, Indonesia, on December 20, 1934. He received his early education at Seminari Menengah Santo Paulus in Yogyakarta and then went on to study philosophy at the Sanata Dharma University in Yogyakarta. In 1956, he entered the Jesuit novitiate in Girisonta, Central Java.
Ordination and Diocesan Service
After completing his novitiate and theological studies in Yogyakarta and Rome, Darmaatmadja was ordained a priest on July 18, 1969. He held various pastoral positions in the Archdiocese of Semarang, including rector of Seminari Menengah Santo Paulus and parish priest of Sendangguwo.
Archbishop of Semarang
In 1983, Pope John Paul II appointed Darmaatmadja as Archbishop of Semarang. During his tenure as archbishop, he played a significant role in promoting interfaith dialogue and social justice.
Military Ordinariate of Indonesia
In 1984, Darmaatmadja was also appointed Military Ordinary of Indonesia, responsible for the spiritual care of the country's armed forces. He held this position for over two decades.
Archbishop of Jakarta
In 1996, Pope John Paul II transferred Darmaatmadja to the Archdiocese of Jakarta, the largest archdiocese in Indonesia. As archbishop of Jakarta, he continued his work on interfaith dialogue and social issues.
Cardinal and President of the Indonesian Bishops' Conference
In 1994, Darmaatmadja was elevated to the College of Cardinals by Pope John Paul II. He served as President of the Indonesian Bishops' Conference from 1988 to 1997 and again from 2000 to 2006.
Retirement and Death
Darmaatmadja retired as Archbishop of Jakarta in 2010. He then lived in the Jesuit community in Yogyakarta until his death on September 19, 2021. He declined to participate in the 2013 papal conclave due to health reasons.
