Biography of Giorgi Margvelashvili

Giorgi Margvelashvili, the fourth President of Georgia, was elected through the calmest elections in the history of this small country's independence. He managed to win in the first round, avoiding accusations of falsification, bribery of voters, and the use of administrative resources.

Early Life and Education

Giorgi Margvelashvili was born on September 4, 1969, in Tbilisi, Georgia. His father, Teimuraz Margvelashvili, had a higher technical education and was involved in party work. His mother, Mzeana Gomelauri, worked as a psychologist. Margvelashvili graduated from the prestigious Tbilisi School No. 1, where children of celebrities and political elites studied. He then became a student at the Faculty of Philosophy and Psychology at Tbilisi State University.

In 1992, after receiving his red diploma, Margvelashvili decided to pursue his childhood passion by working as a tour guide in a tourism company specializing in mountain routes. In 1993-1994, he underwent an internship in sociology at the Central European Institute in Prague. Afterward, he held the position of marketing department head at the company 'Business Diaries' while continuing his studies at the National Academy of Sciences of Georgia. Since 1996, Margvelashvili has been involved in teaching and research work at the Independent University of Tbilisi and the National Democratic Institute of International Relations. In 1998, he defended his doctoral thesis on election technologies, and later co-authored a monograph on transformations in post-Soviet countries with an American sociologist.

Career

From 2000 to 2012, Margvelashvili served as the rector of the Institute of Public Affairs in Georgia and also headed its research department. He was often invited as an expert and analyst on Georgian television programs. Although Margvelashvili did not belong to any political party, he was associated with Zurab Zhvania's opposition bloc and frequently criticized the policies of then-President Mikheil Saakashvili. Over time, he became an advisor to Bidzina Ivanishvili, who led the 'Georgian Dream' party.

Margvelashvili's political career began in 2012. In October of that year, after Ivanishvili's party won the parliamentary elections, the non-partisan rector of the Institute of Public Affairs was offered the position of Minister of Education, and in February of the following year, Margvelashvili also became the Vice Prime Minister. During his time in these positions, teacher salaries were increased, a program of free school buses was implemented, and various innovations were introduced in the education system.

In May 2013, Giorgi Margvelashvili became a presidential candidate from the ruling coalition, and in October 2013, he won a convincing victory over David Bakradze, representing the 'United National Movement' party. The new president declared his commitment to European integration while also expressing interest in developing good neighborly relations with Russia.

Personal Life

During his election campaign, Margvelashvili faced questions about his personal life. At that time, he had never been in an official marriage, although he had a daughter named Anna in 1993. Anna is currently studying at the Institute of Public Affairs in Georgia. In recent years, Giorgi Margvelashvili had a close relationship with Maka Chichua (born in 1965). She worked as a makeup artist, engaged in painting and singing, and appeared in the films "Day" (1999) and "Smile" (2012). In October 2013, Maka Chichua and Giorgi Margvelashvili got married, and on February 2, 2015, they had a son named Teimuraz.
