Biography of Gia Jokhtaberidze
Gia Jokhtaberidze, the former president of Georgia, was born and raised in Sukhumi. His father, Gobron, was the head of the Sukhumi City Committee of the Communist Party of Georgia in the late 1960s. Gia graduated from the Polytechnic Institute in Tbilisi and later pursued his postgraduate studies at the Moscow Engineering Physics Institute. During the 1980s, he worked as a lecturer in Tbilisi before venturing into the computer industry business.
In 1996, Gia became the owner of the largest mobile telecommunications company in Georgia, called "Magticom," with one of its founders being the American company "Metromedia." He married Manana Shevardnadze, a television journalist, in 1994. During a recent press conference in Tbilisi, Manana stated that she might seek political asylum in a foreign country due to the continued persecution of her family. She also mentioned that if Gia had decided to flee the country, he would not have registered at the airport, as there are multiple ways to leave Georgia without being apprehended.
Allegations and Arrest
On February 20th, Gia Jokhtaberidze, the son-in-law of former Georgian President Eduard Shevardnadze, was arrested in the cabin of an airplane departing from Tbilisi to Paris. He is accused of evading taxes on a particularly large scale. The Georgian Prosecutor General stated that Jokhtaberidze had been previously summoned for questioning and warned not to leave the country. Additionally, it has been reported that another close associate of the former president, his brother-in-law Guram Akhvlediani, is currently under investigation as well.
