Biography of Giorgio Vasari
Giorgio Vasari, an Italian painter, architect, and writer of the Mannerist era, was born in Arezzo on July 30, 1511. He moved to Florence around 1524 and worked in the workshops of Andrea del Sarto and Michelangelo. After a trip to Rome, Vasari returned to Florence and served the Medici Dukes. In 1562, he founded the Academy of Drawing. His most important architectural work is the Uffizi complex in Florence, built between 1560 and 1585.
Vasari is the author of frescoes in the Palazzo Vecchio in Florence (from 1555) and the Sala Regia in the Vatican (1571-1573). He passed away in Florence on June 27, 1574.
Style and Contributions
Vasari's style of painting and architecture, which can be described as Mannerist, was influenced by Michelangelo. Although he was not an outstanding artist, Vasari made a significant contribution to the history of art as the creator of "The Lives of the Most Excellent Painters, Sculptors, and Architects" (1550, 1568) - a book that remains an important source of information about the lives and works of Italian Renaissance artists.
