Early Life and Training
Giovanni Francesco Caroto was an Italian artist born in Verona. Trained under Liberale da Verona, Caroto honed his craft and became one of his most prominent pupils.
Influence of Mantua and Masters
While working in Mantua, Caroto encountered the work of Andrea Mantegna, whose influence "not only imparted to him more life than to others but even brought his style very close to that of Mantegna." Other notable influences on his art included Francesco Bonsignori, Leonardo da Vinci, and Raphael.
Dated Masterpieces
Caroto's first dated work is the "Madonna" in the Galleria Estense in Modena, created in 1501. The majority of his works were produced in Verona.

Church of Sant'Eufemia:Frescoes depicting the "Journey of Tobit" and "Lives of Saints Ursula and Lucy" (poorly preserved), along with an altarpiece

Acclaimed Portraiture
Caroto's most famous work is the "Portrait of a Boy with a Drawing of a Doll," housed in the Museo di Castelvecchio in Verona. This exquisite portrait showcases his masterful technique and keen eye for detail.
