Giovanni Benelli: A Cardinal of Note

Giovanni Benelli, an Italian cardinal, was among the papabile, or potential papal candidates, in the two papal conclaves of 1978. He held various high-ranking positions in the Vatican, including that of Archbishop of Florence.

Early Life and Education

Benelli was born in Poggiole di Vernio, Tuscany, on May 12, 1921. His uncle, Guido Benelli, was a Franciscan friar who died as a candidate for sainthood. Benelli was ordained a priest on October 31, 1943, and received a dispensation because he had not yet reached the canonical age for ordination.

Diplomatic and Papal Service

Benelli's talents were recognized early on, and he entered the service of the Vatican's Secretariat of State. On June 11, 1966, he was consecrated as Archbishop of Tusuro and appointed Papal Pro-Nuncio to Senegal and Apostolic Delegate to West Africa.

Sostituto of the Secretariat of State

On June 29, 1967, Benelli was appointed sostituto (Deputy Secretary of State) and Secretary of Cypher in the Vatican Secretariat of State. In this role, he worked closely with Pope Paul VI and became one of his favorites. He held this position for ten years.

Archbishop of Florence

On June 3, 1977, Benelli was appointed Archbishop of Florence. He was elevated to the rank of cardinal on June 27, 1977, and became a Cardinal-Priest with the titular church of Santa Prisca.

Later Life and Legacy

Benelli remained Archbishop of Florence until his death on October 26, 1982. He was considered a potential successor to Pope Paul VI and Pope John Paul I, but ultimately was not elected.
