Early Life and Training

Giovanni di Nicola was born in Siena, Italy. He honed his artistic skills under the tutelage of Agostino da Siena. However, the young artist soon relocated to Pisa, seeking inspiration in the works of Francesco Traini.

Influence of Pisa

In Pisa, di Nicola found ample opportunities to create altarpieces for local churches. His notable contribution includes the fresco cycle in the church of San Martino in Kinzica. The surviving fragments of this cycle showcase the artist's mastery of the medium.

Fragmented Masterpieces

Di Nicola's multi-panel altarpieces, known as polyptychs, have unfortunately been dispersed over time. One such work, a poignant depiction of Saint Anthony Abbot, now resides in London's National Gallery.

Complete Works

One of di Nicola's few extant complete polyptychs is the "Madonna and Child with Saints," preserved in Pisa's Museo San Matteo. This exquisite artwork reflects the prevalent Sienese style of the 14th century.

Local Impact

Giovanni di Nicola's artistic style was influenced by the Sienese masters and Francesco Traini, whose works had a profound impact on Pisan art. However, despite his local fame, di Nicola's influence remained confined to the Pisa region. His imitative approach did not inspire a lasting legacy.
