Early Life and Childhood
Marie Ulven Ringheim, known professionally as girl in red, was born on February 16, 1999, in Horten, Norway. Growing up in a divorced household with her sisters, she describes her childhood as quiet and somewhat mundane. Despite her parents' lack of artistic inclinations, she inherited her musical talent from her grandfather, who gifted her with a guitar for Christmas in 2012.
Musical Beginnings
Inspired by The Smiths, Ringheim began releasing her early songs in Norwegian under the pseudonym Lydia X on SoundCloud in 2015. However, it was not until November 2016 that she adopted the stage name girl in red. The moniker originated from a concert where she lost sight of a friend wearing a red sweater, whom she had a crush on.
Breakthrough with "I Wanna Be Your Girlfriend"
The release of "I Wanna Be Your Girlfriend" in November 2016 marked a turning point in girl in red's career. The track gained widespread acclaim, accumulating over 150 million streams by the end of 2019. It was followed by equally successful singles "Summer Depression" and "Girls."
Rising Star and Critical Acclaim
In 2018, girl in red won a GAFFA-Prisen award and released her debut EP, "Chapter 1." The EP featured the breakout hit "I Wanna Be Your Girlfriend," which placed ninth on The New York Times' list of the year's 68 Best Songs. She continued her rise in 2019 with supporting acts for Conan Gray and her own headlining tour, "The World in Red Tour."
Inspiration and Identity
Girl in red draws inspiration from her personal experiences, emotions, and music itself. She identifies as a lesbian and has been open about her sexuality both in her music and in interviews. In 2019, she told Gay Times that her feelings inspire her songwriting: "I feel like emotions are the most inspiring things. My songwriting is usually trying to reflect some inner emotion and experience."
Current Success and Future Projects
Girl in red's popularity continues to soar, with her photo gracing the cover of NME magazine in January 2020. She has since released new singles, including "Midnight Love," "Rue," and "Two Queens in a King Sized Bed," from her upcoming album "World in Red." She also contributed the song "Kate's Not Here" to the soundtrack of the horror film "The Turning."
