Early Life and Career
Giuseppe D'Altrui was born on April 7, 1934, in Naples, Italy. He began his water polo career at his local club, Rari Nantes Napoli. Later, he moved to Rome and played for G.S. Fiamme Oro.
National Team Debut
In 1954, D'Altrui made his debut for the Italian national water polo team. He earned a bronze medal at the European Championships in Turin. The following year, he helped Italy win gold at the Mediterranean Games in Barcelona.
Olympic Glory
D'Altrui competed in the 1956 Olympics in Melbourne, where Italy finished fourth. He redeemed himself at the 1960 Olympics in Rome, leading the Italian team to a gold medal as captain. He scored one goal in six matches.
Later Career
Following his Olympic triumph, D'Altrui continued to play for the Italian national team. He won gold at the 1963 Mediterranean Games in Naples. He served as captain again at the 1964 Olympics in Tokyo, where Italy finished fourth.
Hall of Fame Induction
In 2010, Giuseppe D'Altrui and his son, Marco, were inducted into the International Swimming Hall of Fame for their outstanding water polo achievements.
Death and Legacy
Giuseppe D'Altrui passed away on February 26, 2024, in Pescara, Italy, at the age of 89. His son, Marco, became an Olympic champion in water polo in 1992 and also won world and European titles.
