Biography of Giuseppe Filianoti
Giuseppe Filianoti, an Italian lyric tenor, was born on January 11, 1974. He received a degree in literature from the University of Messina in Sicily. In 1997, he graduated from the Francesco Cilea Conservatory in his hometown, studying under Anna Vandi. Filianoti then won a prestigious two-year scholarship to study at the Accademia del Teatro alla Scala in Milan. It was during this period that he met Alfredo Kraus, a prominent Spanish tenor, who became his mentor and had a decisive influence on Filianoti's artistic approach, nuances, technique, and style.
Professional Debut and Career
Filianoti made his professional debut in 1998 in Bergamo, starring in Gaetano Donizetti's opera "Don Sebastiano Portoghese." In 1999, while performing as Argirio in "Tancredi" at the Rossini Opera Festival in Pesaro, conductor Riccardo Muti offered him a role in Giovanni Paisiello's "Nina" at La Scala. In 2003, under Muti's direction, Filianoti opened the season at La Scala with Rossini's opera "Mosè in Egitto" and performed Verdi's "Requiem" in Berlin, Tel Aviv, and Buenos Aires with the La Scala troupe and conductor Daniel Barenboim.
He made his debut at the Royal Opera House, Covent Garden in 2000 as Alfredo in "La traviata" and returned to London in 2005 with the lead role in "Don Sebastiano Portoghese" and the role of Nemorino in "L'elisir d'amore." Filianoti is frequently invited to perform at La Scala, where he has sung in "Rigoletto," "Lucia di Lammermoor," and other productions. He has also appeared at the Teatro dell'Opera di Roma in Rome, the Deutsche Oper Berlin, the Vienna State Opera, the Hamburg State Opera, the Teatro Real in Madrid, and leading opera houses in Barcelona and Florence.
In 2005, Filianoti made his American debut at the Metropolitan Opera in New York, where he received enthusiastic reviews for his portrayal of Edgardo in "Lucia di Lammermoor." He has also performed at the San Francisco Opera, Carnegie Hall accompanied by the Opera Orchestra of New York, the Los Angeles Opera, and the Lyric Opera of Chicago, among others.
Recently, he participated in a new production of "L'elisir d'amore" at the Munich State Opera and played the lead role in "Les contes d'Hoffmann" at the Opéra National de Paris.
Awards and Recognitions
In January 1999, Filianoti won first place and the "Best Tenor" award at the Francisco Viñas Opera Competition. Later that same year, he placed second at the Operalia, The World Opera Competition.
In 2004, he was honored with the Franco Abbiati Prize, awarded by the National Association of Italian Music Critics, as the "best singer of the year."
In 2010, Filianoti received the prestigious "San Giorgio d'Oro" honorary award from his hometown of Reggio Calabria, which is given annually to those who enhance the prestige of their homeland.
